Relative dating Studies of strata , the layering of rocks and earth, gave naturalists an appreciation that Earth may have been through many changes during its existence. These layers often contained fossilized remains of unknown creatures, leading some to interpret a progression of organisms from layer to layer. Lomonosov’s ideas were mostly speculative. Messenger The Earth is blanketed by a magnetic field. Without a magnetic field, our atmosphere would slowly be stripped away by harmful radiation, and life would almost certainly not exist as it does today. You might imagine the magnetic field is a timeless, constant aspect of life on Earth, and to some extent you would be right. Every so often — on the order of several hundred thousand years or so — the magnetic field has flipped.

In this way, sites that do not have radioactive or other materials for dating can be given a reliable age estimate.
